  • Create a healthier environment and reduce allergens in your home
  • Leave no soapy residue in your carpet

Everyone is aware that carpeting involves a significant investment. Like any other valuable investment, your carpet requires frequent and constant care in order to preserve and maintain its useful life and its beauty. A regularly planned and scheduled carpet cleaning and maintenance program, will make your carpet look better, last longer, and contribute meaningfully to a healthier home environment.

Here are 4 steps to a fresh, clean and healthy carpet.

1. Vacuum Frequently. Most people in the know will tell you that the most important element in a good carpet maintenance program is regular and frequent vacuuming. You need to vacuum often. Once a day if possible. If not, at least once per week is necessary. Vacuuming will remove the abrasive soil that filters down and settles among the carpet fibers. While residing there, it causes the fibers to be cut and sliced by pressure from foot traffic or any other heavy mass passing over it. Vacuuming will also remove loose particles of sand, grit, skin scales, hair, leaves, food or bugs, etc., that settle at the base of the fibers. You may not be able to see these, but be aware that your carpet is a filter that will collect all the particulate material that floats in the interior environment of your home, or is tracked upon it.

2. Clean Up Spots and Spills Immediately. This is a key habit to adopt, and could save you a lot of frustration, heartache or just cold cash. With the passage of time, spots and spills that are allowed to remain on the carpet can become permanent stains that will be difficult or impossible to remove. If the carpet is new or has had protector applied recently, fresh spots and stains can be removed by simply blotting with water. Remember. Blot. Don’t rub. Rubbing could cause the stain to spread and just lead to more grief.

You will probably need to remove some spots with a good spotting agent. Be wary of spot removers purchased over the counter. Some of them will leave too much soapy residue and can cause yellowing or re-soiling. Some contain strong oxidizing agents, reducing agents, or bleach. You need to know how to use these safely. If you do not, try one that is recommended by your friendly professional carpet cleaner. Just call the carpet cleaning company and ask for their recommendation. A good company will always be willing to offer their help without charge, but you must be careful to describe the condition exactly. Most importantly, let them know what caused the spill.

Apply the spot cleaner carefully to the spot, with a white terry cloth towel, and blot repeatedly. Never rub it in. If you are not able to remove any spot, or for pet urine or feces, call in your professional carpet cleaning company immediately.

3. Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned Often. Most people do not realize how important regular deep cleaning by a competent, certified carpet cleaning company can be. Carpet manufacturers recommend that this is to be done at least once per year. For heavily soiled traffic areas, this should be done more often. If your traffic areas are visibly soiled, you have already waited too long.

4. Have Carpet Protector Re-Applied After Cleaning. Most residencies have stain resistant synthetic, usually nylon, carpet installed. They come pretreated with a protective coating that causes soiling material to slide off the fibers and leave the carpet looking clean for extended periods. With wear however, and after treatment with some of the harsher chemicals used in cleaning, this coating will be removed, causing the carpet to get soiled much more easily, wear faster, and become susceptible to permanent staining. Ask your professional carpet cleaner to re-apply protector after carpet cleaning. This is somewhat costly, but is well worth it.

AJS Carpet Cleaning – Remove Candle Wax From Your Carpet in Eaglemountain

Here are some more carpet cleaning tips  for residents of Eagle Mountain Utah,

from AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. 801 368-0705

Wax on the carpet can be an intimidating carpet cleaning challenge if you don’t know what it is, and how to remove it. But once you can identify it, and are aware of its properties, it is quite a simple job to get it out. I remember the first time I came face to face with this problem. I was overwhelmed, and after wasting a considerable amount of time, I had to abandon the attempt to clean it off the carpet. Then I did a little research, and my next wax cleaning job was so easy that I was as much amazed at the results, as my delighted carpet cleaning client.

Candles are usually made from paraffin, but beeswax, soy, tallow from animal fat and various kinds of gel are also used to make candles. A common characteristic though, is that the residue from burning candles harden rapidly and requires special effort to remove from the surfaces of materials like carpet fabric.

Incidentally, here are some interesting facts about candles, provided by the National Candle Association:

  • Retail sales of candles in the USA are currently estimated at approximately $2 billion each year.
  • 7 out of 10 U.S. households regularly use candles.
  • 35% of annual candle sales take place during the Christmas/Holiday period.
  • Candle users burn candles mostly in the living room (42%), kitchen (18%) and bedroom (13%).

Now, how do you remove candle wax from your carpet?

If the wax is fresh you might want to freeze it first with some ice to harden it.

Next scrape off as much of the hardened stuff as you can, using a spatula or dull knife or spoon. Be careful to not rip, tear or damage the carpet fibers in any way.

Get a piece of cardboard or other absorbent paper product that is at least an eight of an inch thick, and place it over the residual wax.

Plug in a clothes iron and allow it to heat up The setting should be fairly low. Preferably below the “wool” setting.

Place the hot iron on the cardboard or other absorbent material that you have placed over the wax, and allow the heat being transferred to melt the wax slowly. Lift the iron and change the spot regularly, in order to avoid getting the absorbent material over saturated with wax. Melted wax could be re-absorbed into the carpet and run down into the backing.

After the wax is removed, blot the spot repeatedly with a clean white towel to remove any soluble residue that may be left in the carpet.

Here are a few things to remember:

  • Do not over heat the iron. Most carpets, including wool, will be damaged by excessively high temperatures.
  • Never place the heated iron directly unto the carpet. The results could be disastrous.
  • Use an extension cord if necessary. Take care not to burn yourself with the hot iron.
  • Be patient. Repeat the process as often as necessary.

Some colored candle wax may still leave a stain after being removed from the carpet. This stain should come out easily by spraying the spot with water or rubbing alcohol and blotting repeatedly with a white cotton towel.

Remember to rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water afterwards. Dry the spot with a wet vac or dry towels.

If you can’t get rid of the stain, call a professional carpet cleaner to handle it for you.

How To Remove Blood Stains From Your Carpet

If it hasn’t happened to you yet, don’t feel too comfortable – it will, sometime. You will drip blood unto your carpet, or you will discover some one else’s blood stains  somewhere on your carpet. Hopefully, you will find out soon after it happens because like with most other stains, the longer blood stays on your carpet, the more difficult it is to remove it.

But, don’t worry. Blood stains may be cleaned from your carpet fairly easily , if you know what you are doing.

First of all, when you see a red stain, don’t panic. It is important to recognize what the stain is. I have seen carpet cleaners who barge into a home, sees red on the carpet, and without asking any questions or attempting to diagnose the problem or identify the stain, begin immediately to apply inorganic red-stain removal techniques. This is the perfect recipe for disaster.

Blood is primarily protein which is highly reactive, and is particularly sensitive to heat. At elevated temperatures it will bind chemically to the carpet fabric and may set in permanently. In any case, it will become very difficult to remove.

Since it is a protein, the best material to remove it will be an enzyme-based spotter with near neutral pH. There are many household cleansers with these specifications, but you should read the labels carefully before trying to use any of them to remove blood stains.

A word of warning here. Be very careful when handling blood that is from someone other than yourself. You will be risking contamination from blood-borne diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Always wear suitable protective gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with hot germicidal soapy water afterwards.

So, if you have fresh blood stains, first blot up as much as possible by dabbing the spot with a clean white cotton or paper towel. Try to avoid smearing the spot by rubbing sideways as this will only cause the stain to spread. Next flush the stain with COLD water and then dry the spot thoroughly with a clean towel. Repeat this step as many times as necessary. This should take care of fresh blood stains.

For older stains you will need to first scrape off any congealed matter with a dull spatula or a spoon, and then flush with cold water and dab with a dry towel to remove moisture. Most likely the stain will still be there at this point. Now, apply the COLD neutral enzyme spotter and leave for about 15 minutes. Then flush and dry.

If the stain is still there you may try flushing with a dilute household ammonia solution. About 1 tablespoon of household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water should be adequate. After about 10 minutes, spray the spot with clean water from a spray bottle and then blot it again to remove moisture. Then, spray it again and cover it with a towel and leave it to dry.

If this doesn’t get it all out, call a professional carpet cleaner.

Cleaning Carpet To Remove Urine Odors and Stains

The type and degree of carpet cleaning that will be necessary to remove urine odors and stains depends on an individual’s personal level of tolerance to odors in particular. Each individual has different and unique levels of sensitivity to odors. Each situation is also unique. The urine contamination may have been caused by a one-time piddling accident by a small pet, or some dribbling around the toilet by a small child, or it may have accumulated over time from the activities of a Great Dane who has claimed that territory.

The extent of carpet cleaning must therefore be related to how completely you want the odor to be removed and how much you are willing to spend to do this. Someone who lives with a pet in the home would naturally be more tolerant of a malodorous condition, than someone who has just moved into an apartment that was recently vacated by the owner of an untrained pet.

The source and extent of the contamination must first be determined before treatment is attempted. Here are several things we can use to do this:

  1. The Nose. This means getting down on hands and knees and sniffing the carpet. This is not always a good or popular option, and is not adequate where there is extensive contamination.
  2. A Moisture detector.Urine residues attract and retain moisture. which can be detected by good quality instruments.
  3. Ultraviolet light. This is the most efficient, and widely used method. Urine fluoresces under ultraviolet light, and all the urine spots will show up, but the room will have to be dark.
  4. Check the carpet backing. In severe cases, urine stains will be most readily seen on the carpet backing, but this will involve lifting the carpet. In any case however, if the contamination is bad enough, the backing will need to be treated also.

It will also be necessary to check the walls, baseboards, drapes, upholstered furniture, and even the clothes closet for contamination, because urine gives off gases during decomposition, and these gases may permeate the whole house through the ventilation system, and lodge in porous material or fabrics anywhere..

When urine leaves the body it is generally free from bacteria and other microorganisms and primarily consists of uric acid with varying amounts of urea, cholesterol, some enzymes, pigments and trace quantities of other chemical compounds. It is slightly acidic, with a pH value between the range of 5-6.

Urine soaked carpet become a fertile feeding and breeding environment for bacteria and other microbes which break down the urine and creates amino acids. This decomposition results in an unpleasant odor. Oxidation of the uric acid also leads to the formation of some crystalline salts, in an alkaline state. In the presence of moisture, these give off ammonia, which is why the smell of urine is so pervasive when the carpet is wet.

Fresh urine may be removed by applying warm water to the spot and blotting it repeatedly with a towel., and then applying small amounts of dilute dish washing detergents, blotting between applications.

Once the urine stain and odor has set in, the best thing to do is simply call in a professional. You may save yourself a lot of grief by doing this.

AJS Cleaning Tips for Carpeting

Why you should have your carpet cleaned in Utah, with soft water. Water is sometimes called a “universal solvent” although that is a misnomer, because it will not dissolve many substances, unlike aqua regia which will dissolve even gold or platinum – not to mention your carpet fibers! Many people however, claim that all they need to clean carpet is water, just as long as it is soft enough or hot enough. Some even claim that after their carpet cleaning there will be “zero residue”. Well good luck to them.

Of course you can always test that claim by sending a small sample of your carpet fibers (after they clean it), to a reputable analytical laboratory, and ask the lab to determine the chemical composition of the residue remaining on the carpet sample. You would be VERY surprised! Why soft water then? Because the alternative is to use hard water which puts you at a clear disadvantage to begin with, when you are cleaning carpet or upholstery. Hard water typically contains significant amounts of calcium and magnesium carbonates, which retards the effect of the solvents and emulsifiers that good carpet cleaners use to clean your carpets. High temperatures also cause hard water to deposit carbonate scale on all surfaces freely. (Check the bottom of your kettle).

According to the USGS, Utah is one of the States with the highest concentration of hardness in the water supply – typically in excess of 10.5 grains per gallon. So by using soft water we can increase the efficiency of carpet cleaning, and significantly (not totally) eliminate residues. Soft water can be generated using by using either a cation-anion demineralizer or a sodium ion exchanger, commonly known as a water softener.

At AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. we always have on-board water softeners on our carpet cleaning trucks, and we can attest to their efficacy. Call us at (801) 367-0705 for a FREE estimate and further information, or visit our website at http://www.ablejan.com.

What Is the Best Way of Cleaning a Carpet?

Regular carpet cleaning will save you money and protect your health

It is absolutely essential that your carpets should be vacuumed often – preferably daily, but at least once per week. Vacuuming alone will not however be able to keep your carpet free from tracked-in soil particles, air pollutants, grease, cooking vapors, pet dander, dust mites, fleas, pet stains, spilled drinks, etc. Regular cleaning will be necessary to accomplish that.

You may either clean the carpet yourself or call in a competent certified carpet cleaning company to do the job for you.

Schedule your cleaning

Carpet manufacturers recommend that residential carpet should be cleaned at 12 to 18 month intervals, depending on the number of residents and the amount of traffic through the building.

In some situations it may be necessary to have frequent periodic cleaning of just the “traffic lanes”, and a more thorough general cleaning of all the carpet at longer intervals.

The Best Method Is Hot water extraction

Whether you do it yourself or have it done by a professional, it is important to choose a the best cleaning system.

Experts all agree that the hot water extraction system is the best for carpet cleaning. This method is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning.” A cleaning agent is applied unto the carpet and hot water is then used to extract the emusified solution and soil, either with a truck-mounted unit stationed outside the home or with a portable system brought into the home.

Why choose a professional carpet cleaner

Professional carpet cleaners generally use cleaning equipment with more extraction power and heating capability than the rental units available to individuals. They are usually well trained and certified in a variety of cleaning specialties. They understand the equipment, are familiar with the properties of the chemicals they use, and know the proper cleaning agents for the situation at hand.

Odor Removal Do-It-Yourself Tips

Here are a few DO-IT-YOURSELF Tips for odor removal:

Get Rid of Carpet Odors NOW!
You may have spent all day cleaning your home – dusting, mopping, cleaning all the windows and glass, washing the dishes, vacuuming, etc. But if your carpet still smells funny, then you might as well have not done anything.

I’m sure at one time or another you’ve walked into a house that, even though it appears to be clean as a whistle, there was some type of odor that made you feel uncomfortable. Most of the time, your eyes can’t see past what your nose can smell.
Luckily there are solutions to this malodorous problem and some of them may cost you as little as a box of baking soda.

WARNING: Use this only in very small areas.

Baking soda is usually the easiest and quickest solution for carpet odors. Often, this is all you’ll need to remove typical odors. All you need to do is sprinkle some on the effected area and leave it there for a little while. This allows the baking soda to permeate into the carpet fibers and absorb any odors. Then just remove the power by vacuuming the affected area.

But NEVER use too much baking soda. Too much powder can contribute to a big problem.

Enzymes

Sometimes carpet odors are not so simple. Sometimes you get one of those odors that are very persistent and baking soda alone is simply not enough. For these situations you may need an enzyme. These can be bought over the counter at any local super center or you may call us for a recommendation. Just follow the instructions on the can and voila! No more odors

.

Steam Cleaning

So what happens when you’ve got an odor that just won’t budge? Well it may be time to call in the professionals. Odors are usually trapped in your carpet by dirt that hasn’t been cleaned up on a regular basis. When this is the case you may want to try steam cleaning after the area has been treated with an effective enzyme.
Steam cleaning loosens the dirt, which allows the trapped odor to be removed much more effectively. Using a steam-cleaning product in conjunction with the steam will result in a better outcome. Steam cleaning products can also be bought at any local store or you may also want to try white vinegar for a more eco-friendly option.

What if the source of carpet odors is in the padding beneath the carpet?

Many times the source of carpet odors is in the padding beneath the carpet rather than in the carpet itself.
When this is the case you may have to replace the pad and clean the back and surface of the carpet. This is indeed something the professionals are trained to do. But this should be considered a last case scenario.

If you cannot remove a carpet odor on your own you should consider calling us to tackle the problem before replacing the carpet. We have tools, solutions, and the knowledge that may save you from having to fork out big money to replace your carpeting.

Call us when you need help!

These tips should help you remove many ordinary carpet odors but remember, if you can’t do it yourself there are always trained professionals who can step in and take care of your odor problems. We can help you avoid replacing your carpet and get your home smelling good again.
